When several fires ravaged Battle Harbour Island in the 1930s and destroyed Dr. Grenfell’s mission hospital, among other things, it confirmed the already widely supported opinion that it was becoming preferable to settle the population on the mainland rather than on islands that were too exposed to communication disruptions. The hospital and then the school were rebuilt at Mary’s Harbour. St Mary’s School dates back to 1980, taking over the former facilities.
