In addition to the commercial premises, accommodation was provided for the staff, as initially no buildings existed in Apex. Over the years, the federal authorities supplied prefabricated houses to the Inuit. As Iqaluit grew, the houses in Apex became more expensive to maintain and residents were encouraged to move, along with their homes.
