Batoche, SK

(continuer en français)

This is the house rebuilt by Jean Caron after the previous one was burnt down during the Battle of Batoche in 1885. Jean Caron was a Métis, descendant of a French coureur des bois married to a native. Many of them worked as voyageurs for the fur trading companies and were granted a plot of land where they settled their families, passing it down from generation to generation. When Canada took control of the Hudson’s Bay Company territories in 1870, their rights to the land were not recognized.
