Toronto, Irish legacy, ON
Mary McAlesee, President of the Republic of Ireland, unveiled a monument in June 2007 on Toronto Waterfront at Ireland Park. It was a series of sculptures by artist Rowan Gillespie, echoing his Famine Memorial installed in Dublin in 1997 and showing starving immigrants about to embark. In Toronto the same people arrive, the weakest fall to the ground while the strongest rise up full of hope.
