Among the symbols highlighted in the decorations of Nathan Philipps Square, the maple leaf punctuates the new sign of the city. The stylized maple leaf refers to the Canadian flag in its version created in 1965, replacing the 1867 flag that still contained the Union Jack of the United Kingdom. The maple leaf of the national flag, however, has eleven points rather than nine.
