Best of Canada, Nunavut
For the Anglican Church, Iqaluit is the seat of the largest diocese in the world, covering Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Nunavik in northern Quebec. St. Jude’s Cathedral is also called the Igloo Cathedral for its rounded, white shape. This unique feature dates back to 1972 when the first version was built, after a fire a second, larger construction further emphasizes the resemblance to an igloo. Services are held in both English and Inuktitut.

Well there’s no mystery over why it’s called the “Igloo Cathedral” huh!? Great looking building.

You’re right, the Iqaluit cathedral is quite spectacular and fits well with its surroundings and cultural references.

What a very unusual church! I’d love to see inside it. Have you photos of the interior as well? You should post them, I’m sure we’d all like to see them. It’s also nice to see a church attempting to blend in with its surroundings as this one seems to do.

I only tried once to get into the church but the doors were closed, I thought I would come back but it didn’t happen and Sunday mass was the day I left.

It’s a very attractive design that would be noticed anywhere, but given the context of Nunavut, it’s simply in keeping with the surroundings.
