Château de Fontainebleau
The Cour d’Honneur was first known for its Horseshoe Staircase dating from 1550. However, it has become the Cour des Adieux (Farewell Court) since the abdication of Napoleon I in 1814, who reviewed the Old Guard assembled in this court one last time. Listed as a historic monument, the Château de Fontainebleau has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.

Another memory from my visit in 1978….I remember being amazed at how small the beds were compared to modern day. Marie Antoinette must have been tiny!

They were certainly shorter in those days, we would have been giants. The practice was also to sleep more or less sitting up, they were afraid of suffocating by sleeping lying down.
