Château de Fontainebleau
The great gallery designed by François I now bears his name. Its generous proportions show the essential role that the king intended the Château de Fontainebleau to play during his reign. He therefore invited Italian artists to Fontainebleau with the idea of infusing French artists with the ideas and techniques of the Italian Renaissance. This was known as the Ecole de Fontainebleau, which did much to shape the development of French art at the time.
