Following the ancient model of triumphal arches honouring victorious troops, Napoleon wanted an Arc de Triomphe worthy of the success of his armies, which prevailed, temporarily, from Portugal to Moscow, from Egypt to Scandinavia, thus spreading part of the ideals of the French Revolution. Napoleon left power in 1815, and the Arc was not completed until 1836, under the restored monarchy. In 2019, 1.7 million people visited it, while it is currently being wrapped according to Christo’s design.
