Another weekend in Bordeaux

The monument to the Girondins stands at the end of the vast Place des Quinconces. The ‘Girondins’ referred to were a group of moderate deputies during the French Revolution, many of whom were indeed from Bordeaux, but not all. They were guillotined in 1793 when Robespierre’s Jacobins gained the upper hand, only to be guillotined in turn later on.
