Afghanistan was not always a troubled region. In the first century, it was part of a vast kingdom straddling India and China, very active in the silk trade routes. In Begram, French archaeological missions found a walled royal treasure containing precious objects of various origins. Thus these blue jugs would have come either from Europe or Egypt.

That time has gone, unfortunately! I remember sometimes by the end of 60th and the beginning of 70th my friend’s parents stayed in Afghanistan for few years with the business purposes. Their stories about this country were interesting, but the most important thing as of today it was absolutely safe there.

I agree, for many years we have associated Afghanistan with wars and crises, whereas the country could be a great land of discovery, having remained outside modernity.
