Anne of Brittany (1477-1532), heiress to the Duchy of Brittany, was forced to marry the French king, Charles VIII, in order to unify their two territories. The marriage contract stipulated that she should also marry the next king of France, which she did by subsequently marrying Louis XII. She tried to maintain the autonomy of Brittany as much as possible.
