To make life easier for pedestrians, who are now car-free, La Rochelle does have one historic advantage: the arches, which come in very handy on rainy or hot days. Since the Middle Ages, many commercial streets have been equipped with arches, not to shelter passers-by, but to display merchandise beyond the shop.
