A weekend in Biarritz

The rise of Biarritz owes a lot to the Empress Eugenie, of Spanish origin, who already knew the place. She persuaded Napoleon III to come here in 1854, and a palace was built where the Hôtel du Palais is now located. In 1903, a fire destroyed the old palace, which was rebuilt and enlarged to become the present palace. Around the imperial palace, other resorts were established, bringing together Parisian and soon European high society.
