Cobourg is located about 100 kilometres, 70 miles west of Toronto. During the 19th century the port developed through trade with the other side of Lake Ontario, New York State. A few years ago, the municipality undertook to repaint the lighthouse by adding maple leaves and the name of the city, which seemed to be in contravention of its historical character.
